Every week someone DMs me complaining that the algorithm killed their reach. "Instagram changed something." "TikTok is suppressing me." "LinkedIn shadow-banned my post."
No.
No it didn't. Your content did.
I manage social accounts for over 40 brands right now. Some of them are CRUSHING it. Some are struggling. They're all on the same platforms. Same algorithms. Same rules. The difference isn't the algorithm. THE DIFFERENCE IS THE CONTENT.
THE ALGORITHM IS YOUR FRIEND
Here's something most people don't understand: the algorithm WANTS to show your content to people. That's literally its job. TikTok, Instagram, YouTube — they all need content to keep users on the platform. If your content keeps people watching, they will push it. Period.
The algorithm is a meritocracy with one metric: DOES THIS MAKE PEOPLE STOP SCROLLING?
If your content doesn't make people stop scrolling, it's not the algorithm's fault. It's yours.
WHAT "BORING" ACTUALLY MEANS
Boring doesn't mean your topic is boring. It means your execution is boring. Let me break it down:
Boring hook. You have 1.5 seconds. If your first frame or first line doesn't create a reason to stay, you're done. We tested this across 600+ Reels last quarter. Posts with strong hooks got 4x the watch time. Same topics. Same accounts. Different hooks.
Boring format. You're posting the same carousel template you downloaded in 2023. You're doing the same talking-head video everyone else is doing. The format IS the content now. Switch it up. Try something weird. The platforms reward novelty.
Boring energy. I can feel when someone recorded a video because they "had to" versus because they actually had something to say. The audience can feel it too. If you're not fired up about what you're posting, why would anyone else be?
THE FIX IS SIMPLE (NOT EASY)
Post 5 pieces of content this week. Make each one different. Different format. Different hook style. Different energy.
Look at the data after 7 days. One of those 5 will outperform the others. That's the algorithm telling you what it wants. What your AUDIENCE wants.
Now make 5 more like the winner.
That's it. That's the entire algorithm strategy. Test. Read the data. Double down on what works. Repeat forever. This is exactly what we did in the 847 post experiment — and the results speak for themselves.
Stop blaming the algorithm. Start studying it. It's literally giving you free feedback on what the market wants. Most companies pay consultants six figures for that information. You're getting it for free every time you post. And if you need help getting out of your own head and actually hitting publish, I wrote about that too.
POST 5 DIFFERENT PIECES OF CONTENT THIS WEEK. STUDY THE DATA. LET THE ALGORITHM COACH YOU. START TODAY.
