REX CALDWELL SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING & THE ATTENTION ECONOMY

TRADITIONAL MARKETING IS DEAD. ATTENTION MARKETING ATE IT.

May 7, 2026

Billboards. TV spots. Print ads. Magazine spreads.

I'm not saying they don't exist. I'm saying they don't matter.

Not the way they used to. Not even close.

THE OLD PLAYBOOK IS BROKEN

Traditional marketing was built on one idea: interrupt people and hope they remember you. Buy a Super Bowl ad. Rent a billboard on the highway. Put your logo in a magazine next to an article about something unrelated.

That worked when there were 4 TV channels and people actually read magazines. It doesn't work when your audience has INFINITE CONTENT competing for their attention every second of every day.

I talked to a CMO last month who spent $1.2 million on a billboard campaign. I asked him what the ROI was. He said, "Well, it's hard to measure brand awareness." That's code for: WE HAVE NO IDEA IF IT WORKED.

Meanwhile, I can tell you exactly how many people saw my Instagram post yesterday, how long they watched, and how many clicked through. For free. That's the attention-first approach — and it's what every brand should be building.

ATTENTION MARKETING IS THE REPLACEMENT

Attention marketing is simple: go where people are already looking, and give them something worth stopping for.

That's it.

People are on their phones. They're scrolling TikTok. They're watching YouTube. They're browsing LinkedIn during meetings they should be paying attention to. THAT'S where you need to be.

Not on a billboard they drive past at 70 mph. Not in a magazine sitting in a dentist's office. On the screen they stare at for 7 hours a day.

THE NUMBERS DON'T LIE

At our agency, we track this obsessively. Here's what we've seen across our client base in the last 12 months:

Cost per 1,000 impressions on organic social: $0. Zero. Free.

Cost per 1,000 impressions on a billboard: $5-$15. And you can't target. You can't retarget. You can't measure.

Cost per 1,000 impressions on TV: $20-$40. And half the audience is in the kitchen getting a snack.

We had a client switch $200K from traditional media to organic social + paid social last year. Their customer acquisition cost dropped by 62%. Their brand awareness — actually measured, not guessed — went up 3x.

WHY PEOPLE STILL DO TRADITIONAL

Ego. That's the real answer.

People love seeing their brand on a billboard. They love the Super Bowl ad. It feels prestigious. It's something you can show your parents. "Look, we made it."

But prestige doesn't pay the bills. Attention does. Revenue does. And the brands that are growing fastest right now are the ones that figured this out early.

Duolingo didn't become a cultural phenomenon through TV ads. They did it through unhinged TikTok content. Liquid I.V. built a nine-figure brand through creators, not commercials.

The future of marketing is already here. It's just not evenly distributed. Some brands get it. Most don't.

Don't be most brands. I built my entire agency on $0 in ad spend — pure organic content. If that doesn't prove the model works, nothing will.

TAKE 10% OF YOUR TRADITIONAL BUDGET AND PUT IT INTO ORGANIC CONTENT. JUST 10%. WATCH WHAT HAPPENS.
